Community Feature and Profile Magazine

Midland Magazine is a regular publication of The Midland Reporter-Telegram in Midland, Texas. A 50-100 page magazine, each publication takes a team effort to put together. I've worked with newspaper companies since my first job 25 years ago as a designer for a small Kansas newspaper. While Midland Magazine is a glossy magazine and not newsprint, I always enjoy the process of putting together all the pieces from writers, editors, photographers and advertising into something that readers will enjoy.

Darren’s work on our magazines and other publications over the years has always been top notch. Every magazine has a different look and feel to it and he does a great job with making each one unique thanks to his superb design skills and creative mind for building a project from scratch. His work is always turned around in a timely manner despite multiple deadlines and he is very diligent with helping us make those key last minute changes before the project is sent off to the printer. Darren is great to work with and I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for help with any graphic design needs. - Kevin S.

Bethany Theological Seminary Alumni Magazine

Wonder & Word is a publication for alumni and friends of Bethany Theological Seminary in Richmond, Indiana. I design the magazine in keeping with their existing branding, while working to make each spread visually interesting and readable.

Darren is a great collaborator, and I always enjoy working with him. As we work together on each issue of Wonder & Word magazine, he asks thoughtful questions and offers creative suggestions about how to present articles in dynamic and attractive ways. Darren does a great job of listening to my suggestions and using the available images and text to tell the story of Bethany Seminary in a positive, hopeful, and engaging way. He is always highly responsive, and he does a great job completing complex projects on deadline. I really enjoy working with Darren on the magazine, and I highly recommend him to others. - Jonathan G.

PROCESS

PLAN

Bethany provides a rough table of contents and story budget. They share any plans for photography or art, and ideas about potential layout.

PREP

After gathering text and photos from Bethany, I "sketch" out the entire publication. I get everything placed in my InDesign file and roughly positioned. I apply styles to elements and begin to get an idea how things will fit together. I find stock photography for some articles and create illustrations if needed for graphic elements.

REFINE

I make continual passes over the entire magazine, working on spreads individually, while trying to maintain an overall cohesive look. Eventually the piece takes shape.

REVISE

Planning and preparation make the revision process go smoothly. Bethany marks changes on my PDF file and I provide revised proofs.

FINALIZE

With final approval, I provide a press-ready PDF file for printing.

Website for SMU Perkins Youth Ministry Program

Reboot is a program of SMU Perkins School of Theology. The program works with churches to develop new ways of working with youth. Their website design and development included logo design, video production, custom CSS and Javascript, form development, and Photoshop work. The website also includes Spanish translations for all pages. Reboot wanted to incorporate the "rotating arrow" icon from their logo into photos throughout the site, so we used stock images with circular shapes with the icon creatively added.

Bethany Theological Seminary Viewbook

I was able to be involved in many aspects of this viewbook production, from on-site photography to design and print procurement. The non-traditional wide horizontal layout allowed for some interesting uses of photography and text. The booklet included a pocket inside the back cover for inserting additional pages and informational cards.
